Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on what we have to be grateful for. It’s also a time when we gather around the table with friends and family to enjoy the season’s favourite recipes. From oven-roasted turkey and mashed potatoes, to carrot cake and pecan pie, the Thanksgiving feast is based in traditions that go back to 1620, when the pilgrims arrived in Cape Cod after a treacherous journey on the Mayflower. They established a village at Plymouth and one year later, after their first corn harvest proved successful, they shared a celebratory feast with the Wampanoag Indians that lasted for three days. But did you know that dessert was not a part of that initial feast?! That’s because the new colony lacked the necessary ingredients to make pie crust, like flour and butter, or those to add sweetness, like sugar and molasses, and they had not yet constructed ovens for baking. Of course today, a Thanksgiving feast is not complete without dessert and that’s something we have to be grateful for.
